COVID-19 League Update #2

Hello HVLL Families

I hope you and your families are healthy.  Watching this pandemic unfold has been a tragedy for so many.  It was easier in the beginning to watch the numbers climb and feel removed, but as more and more of us are impacted, either by reduced hours, being laid off, or getting the virus itself, it is not only concerning but frankly a bit scary.  How did it get that just going to the store is daunting?

I wanted to provide an update for all of you.  While there are many things still unknown, I can share with you what we do know.

First, every board member is still committed to having a baseball season.  And, that is not only true for our league.  Every league in our district remains committed to having a season.  We are coordinating with the other leagues to look at all options, including extending the season and what that would look like.

In my last update, I thought we would be playing by now, or at least was hoping that by the end of spring break, when kids go back to school, we would once again be back on the baseball field.  Since that time, schools have closed for the year.  When it will be safe to gather together, whether it be to gather with friends, or play baseball, is a question everyone in America and around the world is asking.  The most recent guidance from Little League International (LLI) states “we recommend that our leagues exercise an abundance of caution and implement a temporary suspension/delay of all league activities until no earlier than May 11.”  We are following this guidance, as well as guidance from the CDC, the state of California, and the City of Huntington Beach.  We all want to play, but will only do so when it is safe.

Second, LLI is still committed to having the All Star tournament.  They have reached out to all leagues for feedback on how best to accomplish this, in light of the flexibility and uncertainties that we are all currently facing.

Third, your board continues to do everything we can to ensure that once it is safe to play, we are ready to go.  While the city has temporarily closed our fields, we continue to ensure the fields and facilities are properly maintained so that once it is approved, we can “play ball”.

As a board, we all miss the community of HVLL.

I will update everyone again in the beginning of May.  If something comes up before that, I will update you.  Until then, Happy Easter and we hope you and your family remain safe and healthy.

Blessings,

Tim Stone
