Snack Bar - Team Volunteers

The HVLL Snack Bar serves as an important source of revenue for our league, but also keeps our players and fans happy!  Since our league operates on a volunteer basis, we rely on our HVLL families to staff it.

During the season, each team (Farm through Majors) is assigned four (4) dates, in which they are required to provide two (2) volunteers to cover a total of eight (8), two-hour snack bar shifts:

      2, two-hour Saturday shifts

      2, two-hour weekday shifts

      2 volunteers for each shift

Please note:
 - Upper Tee-Ball must provide for two (2) Saturdays - two (2) volunteers/shift
 - Lower Tee-Ball must provide for one (1) Saturday - two (2) volunteers/shift

As an alternative, you or your team may choose not to work and pay a buy-out fee of $25 per volunteer per shift ($200 for the whole season) to the Snack Bar Coordinator at least one (1) week prior to the scheduled shift.

**It is important to communicate with the Snack Bar Coordinator at least one week in advance of your shift about whether you plan to work the shift or pay the buy-out so that she can plan accordingly. If you choose to pay the buy-out and fail to provide the one week notice, it will result in a late fee of $10, raising the price to $35 per volunteer. **

For safety reasons, no one other than those working are allowed in the snack bar at any time. Minimum age is 14.

Please contact the Snack Bar Coordinator, Cathi Jensen at [email protected], with questions, comments or concerns.

SCORE-KEEPING & PITCH-COUNTING - Team Volunteers

Some important reminders:

  1. It is required that the Scorekeeper (Home Team) and the Pitch Counter (Visitor) for all divisions (with the exception of Farm, where there is no score booth or pitch-counter) occupy the "score booth" for the duration of the game.  For Minor C, you may either bring your own chair or there are folding chairs available in the dugouts and the books (score and pitch-count) are located in the Farm equipment shed adjacent to the snack bar.

Pursuant to the HVLL By-laws, Section XIII:

  2. Each manager must supply the Scorekeeper, at least 15 minutes prior to game start time, with:
     - The team lineup, including uniform number, full name and position(s) scheduled to be played for each inning for each player.
     - A list of absentee players, along with reason for absence, if known, and players who are being disciplined.

  3. Each Manager is to supply the opposing Manager, at least 15 minutes prior to game time, with their starting lineup and the players’ positions for the first inning.

  4. Each Manager must declare pitching eligibility prior to the start of each game, by supplying the pitching eligibility roster to the official scorekeeper.

  5. Each Manager must report all substitutions and changes to the official scorekeeper when they are made. Changes include any time the actual position being played by a player differs from the position scheduled to be played by that player as presented in the lineup supplied to the official scorekeeper prior to the game.

Umpires - Team Responsibilities

Each team (with the exception of Lower Tee-ball) is responsible for providing umpires, for a number of games during the season.

The following divisions must provide both a home plate and base umpire for each game:

  • Majors teams are assigned to games in Minors A & B
  • Minor A teams are assigned to games in Majors and Minor B
  • Minor B teams are assigned to games in Majors and Minor A
  • Minor C teams are assigned to games in Minor B

Assignments for Farm and Upper Tee-Ball teams:

These teams are assigned to games in Minor C.  For the most part, Junior Umpires will sign up to cover the home plate and base umpire responsibilities. However, you must provide an Adult Umpire to be present on the field (as part of a 3-person umpire crew) for all games in which two Junior Umpires are assigned to a game. The Adult Umpire could also serve as the lone base umpire or perhaps the home plate umpire in the event of missing youth umpires.

Adult Umpires must be prepared to execute the following actions and activities:

  1. Participate in pre-game meeting with managers and umpires and contribute if needed. Make sure that your name is in the official scorebook.

  2. Be on the field serving as part of the 3-person umpire crew and present at all discussions managers have with a youth umpire. If a manager has a question about a call made by a junior umpire, the manager must ensure that the adult umpire is present before the manager approaches a youth umpire. Managers must still direct their questions to the umpire that made the call.

  3. Oversee conduct of all players, managers, coaches, umpires, and deal with unruly spectators.

  4. Have the authority to disqualify or eject any player, coach, or manager.

Junior Umpires are eligible to serve as umpires in Minor C, and MAY BE ELIGIBLE for games in Minor B and above with prior approval from the Umpire-in-Charge.

Adult Game Coordinators must be present for all games (in Minor B and above) in which two Junior Umpires are assigned to a game (such as when hired by a manager). It is the assigned manager’s responsibility to provide an Adult Game Coordinator or the game cannot be played. The Game Coordinator must be an adult other than the participating Manger or coaches, and who is prepared to execute the following actions and activities:

  1. Participate in pre-game meeting with managers and umpires and contribute if needed. Make sure that your name is in the official scorebook.

  2. Remain present at the game at all times, (including between half‐innings) and watching intently from a position in close proximity to see all actions on the field.
  3. Be present on the field if a manager has a question about a call made by a junior umpire. Managers must ensure that the Adult Game Coordinator is present before the manager approaches a youth umpire. Managers must still direct their questions to the umpire that made the call.

  4. Oversee conduct of all players, managers, coaches, umpires, and deal with unruly spectators.

  5. Have the authority to disqualify or eject any player, coach, or manager.
