USA Baseball Bat Standards for 2018

Beginning on January 1, 2018, the new USA Baseball Bat Standard will be implemented. Baseball bats that were approved for use during the 2017 season will no longer be acceptable for use in any Little League game or activity (including tryouts) starting on January 1, 2018. For more information on the USABat standard and a complete list of bats approved through the USABat Standard, visit usabat.com.

Please note:
We will have some USA-approved bats at tryouts for players who have yet to buy a bat.  Rawlings will attend tryouts and provide demos for use.  They will have a tent set up to answer any questions and we are hopeful that they will provide a discount on their bats if some of the players would like to purchase a Rawlings model.

Tell Me More About Tryouts - FAQ

  • Who must participate in tryouts?
Tryouts are only for players who are League Age 8 and above.  ALL Players who are League Age 8 or older, must tryout/be evaluated in order to be placed on a team.  This is mandated by Little League International and there are no exceptions. Any League Age 7 players who want to be eligible for the Minor C division draft must also participate in a league-sanctioned tryout. At the annual Tryout Event, players are evaluated on their abilities to throw, hit and run.
  • What happens if my player "bombs" at tryouts?
Don't worry, it happens. Rest assured that ALL players will be placed on a team regardless of their performance at tryouts.
  • When are tryouts for the 2018 season?
Tryouts for the majority of players will take place during the first weekend of the new year, on January 6-7, 2018. On Saturday, tryouts will begin with players who are League Age 12 and continue by age group throughout the day down to League Age 9. Depending on the number of players within each age group, some League Age 8 players may also be evaluated on that day. On Sunday, the remaining League Age 8 and any League Age 7 players interested in becoming eligible for the Minor C division draft will also take place. Tryouts for Junior division players will take place on the morning of Saturday, January 13, 2018.
  • How do I know what time to show up?
During the first week of January, each player will receive a designated date and time via email from the HVLL Player Agent. Unless absolutely necessary, PLEASE attend at your designated tryout time. Tryout times are organized by age group and coordinated with the various team managers who are present to evaluate players for the various divisions in which they qualify to play.  For example, if a League Age 12 player shows up on Sunday, the Majors division managers will not be there to rate their abilities.
  • What if my player is unable to attend at the designated time?
We understand that things happen and conflict sometimes can't be avoided. If you find that you are absolutely not able to attend tryouts at your designated time, please contact the HVLL Player Agent at [email protected], as soon as possible to make other arrangements.  As a reminder, Little League International requires that ALL Players who are League Age 8 or older, tryout/be evaluated in order to be placed on a team prior to the draft. There are no exceptions.
  • What else do I need to know?
Probably the most important thing that we ask at tryouts is for your patience. There are more than 300 players that need to be evaluated during the first weekend of tryouts.  We have a host of dedicated volunteers who do their very best to keep things running smoothly and on time. When you arrive, please check in (tryouts take place at the Majors field), have your player get warmed up and get ready to have fun!

Location

All tryouts will take place on the Majors field. Please allow enough time before your designated appointment to check-in and warm up.

Tell Me More About the Draft - FAQ

  • What is the draft?
After tryouts, managers of each division (Minor C and up) participate in a Player Draft Night.  The draft helps the League form balanced teams and ensure that players are selected in divisions with other players of similar ability.  At the draft, managers first draw a random order and then draft their teams in a serpentine fashion.  For example, whomever has the last pick in the first round, will get the first pick in the second round and so forth.  The highest division drafts first (usually Majors) and is followed by the next lower division on the following night.  Any player not selected in a draft is automatically placed in the draft for the next (lower) division on the subsequent night.
  • Can players be protected?
Players may not be protected by managers, with the exception of their own children. The children of any assistant coaches must be selected during the draft or traded for on draft night.
  • In which division will my player be placed?
The divisions in which players will be drafted, depends on each individual player. Players with advanced ability may be selected for the highest division that they are eligible to play. For example, a League-Age 8 player first becomes eligible during the Minor B draft.  The majority of League Age 8 players will be drafted into Minor C.  However, there might be a small group of players that need more development, remain undrafted and are then placed in the Farm division. This arrangement gives each child the greatest opportunity to develop during the season.
